At 700 meters (2000 ft) above sea level, the climate stays cool and comfortable year-round (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C). There is a lot of rain (it's a rainforest!), but mosquitoes are not a problem. RARA AVIS offers clean and comfortable lodging, deep in the heart of the jungle, with home-style Costa Rican meals, plus an adventurous learning experience different from ordinary tourism. At the same time, you will be encouraging the wise use of the rainforest --- the reason for the existence of Rara Avis. Because of the difficult access, we strongly recommend a minimum stay of two nights. The tractor leaves Las Horquetas every morning at 9:30 AM, arriving for lunch if all goes well. Departure by tractor from Rara Avis is at 2:00 PM, arriving in Horquetas at about 5:30 PM. Horses or jeep transportation can be arranged anytime during daylight (but require walking the three kilometers between the Waterfall Lodge and El Plastico). The diversity of the plant and animal life in Rara Avis is stunning. Over 362 species of birds have been found at Rara Avis, including sunbitterns, umbrella-birds, great green macaws, parrots, and toucans. There is a good chance to see monkeys, anteaters, or coatimundis if you walk silently through the forest, or to spot the tracks of tapirs and other jungle cats. The treetops are festooned with vines, lianas, bromeliads, and orchids, and there are more kinds of plants, birds, and butterflies in our reserve than in all of Europe ! |

The owners, a Canadian and a Tica, have extensive hotel experience. FOOD The cuisine of the Hotel Cahuita Jaguar would get high ratings in San José, so you will surprised to find such excellent fare in this little place. French Caribbean cooking with creamy wine sauces. Abundant use of local fruits and vegetables with a salad with every meal. Local specialties like breadfruit, ayi kee and pejiballes are also served. The menu changes daily, and features such items as sirloin in peanut sauce, medallions of beef in two sauces, shrimp in herb sauce, dorado in herbs, lobster, moussaka, and even at times, chile con carne. The setting is the open-air patio under a traditional Caribbean peaked roof, a sort of take-off on unpretentious fine dining in the French countryside. Perhaps best of all is the price. Most items, even shrimp, go for $10 or less including salad, vegetable, dessert (often fresh fruit topped with ice cream) and coffee. Complete breakfasts go for about $4. ROOMS Hotel Jaguar has 45 rooms. Some rooms can be combined together forming suites. Most rooms are 500 square feet, which includes private bath and covered terrace. All beds are queen size and have firm mattresses. The rooms have the special passive cooling design with extra large windows, cross ventilation, high ceilings, thermo syphoning roof vents, wooden shutters and thermal isolation. Sunbittern, oropendola, motmot, at least four species of trogons, umbrella birds, fruits crows, jacamars, tinamous, stripe-breasted and black throated wrens are some of more than 400 species that have been recorded in our area (50% of the species of Costa Rica).

La Quinta together with its guests and the Sarapiquí Conservation Association is helping to buy trees on the river side areas so the great macaw can maintain nesting places.
